Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you. Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics. Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere. Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original album's release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obi's are collectable, and should not be discarded. All mini-sleeve releases are tremendously limited editions mainly pressed on future orders only and once released immediately out of print. This fact along with other latter features we've mentioned make these titles rare collectibles that sell in the collectors markets for $100's of dollars apiece . THE JOURNEY SET - ESCAPE/FRONTIERS box set INCLUDES CAPTURED WITH EXPENSIVE GATEFOLD REPLICA JACKET - While many would consider the next album "Escape" to be their peak, I consider the former to be even better. Captured was the last album to feature keyboard svengahli Gregg Rolie. The band never sounded tighter, and Steve Perry vocal never sounded better. His high range was clearly at it's peak. The year after this release, Journey would launch into commercial stardom with "Don't Stop Believin'", "Who's Cryin' Now", and "Open Arms", all with new keyboardist and songwriter Jon Cain on board. Certainly, those songs are all incredible. But Cain brought more of a pop/synth keyboard sound into the group. And for Hammond B-3 lovers, like myself, Gregg Rolie was one of the best. Captured provides a true testament to that and a super-tight group at it's R and B best! Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Majestic 2. Where Were You 3. Just The Same Way 4. Line Of Fire 5. Lights 6. Stay Awhile 7. Too Late 8. Dixie Highway 9. Feeling That Way 10. Anytime 11. Do You Recall 12. Walks Like A Lady 13. La Do Da 14. Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' 15. Wheel In The Sky 16. Any Way You Want It 17. Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love) ESCAPE WITH ORIGINAL EMBOSSED JACKET - Twenty-five years ago, "Escape" went to No. 1 with three top 10 hits. It represented a new beginning of rock 'n' roll after the implosion of disco. Emphasizing strength and freedom of youth, survival of love and new hope, it became a classic of that era that still holds up. Every song is a keeper with fantastic vocals and instrumental hooks. Despite poor critical reviews, this album went on the sell over 10 million copies and is still a standard staple in rock & roll history! Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Don't Stop Believin' 2. Stone In Love 3. Who's Crying Now 4. Keep On Runnin' 5. Still They Ride 6. Escape 7. Lay It Down 8. Dead Or Alive 9. Mother, Father 10. Open Arms 11. La Raza Del Sol FRONTIERS - After the wildly successful commercial breakthrough of "Escape", Journey followed up and attempted to consolidate this success with the release of "Frontiers" an even more ccmmercial but a little less fluent and musically substantial effort. This album unlike "Escape" is a little more of a mixed bag in that it contains some of the better single ballads and tracks that Journey have ever done but combined with some obviously poor fillers. "Escape" had good single tracks but the fillers hard some musical merit resulting in a very cohesive-sounding and hence an overall all-round better sounding album and not just a few singles accompanied with lots of padding like "Frontiers" does. Still, on the strength of the good singles though, this album managed to sell loads of copies as fans found tracks like "Faithfully", "Send Her My Love", "Separate Ways" and "After the Fall" too hard to resist and hence were forgiving of duds like "Rubicon" and "Edge of the Blade". This version of the album though is a very good replica of the original vinyl sleeve version and the sound quality is well remastered. It also includes a sticker, all the lyrics in English and Japanese, a 12-page all-colour booklet, a 1983 all-colour calendar and 4 bonus tracks: "Only the Young", "Ask the Lonely", "Liberty" and "Only Solutions". Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) 2. Send Her My Love 3. Chain Reaction 4. After The Fall 5. Faithfully 6. Edge Of The Blade 7. Troubled Child 8. Back Talk 9. Frontiers 10. Rubicon 11. Only The Young 12. Ask The Lonely 13. Liberty 14. Only Solutions RAISED ON RADIO - On the verge of breakup, Journey released this last Steve Perry-fronted album to mediocre reviews. In my opinion, this album was actually refreshing due to its different sounding tracks as opposed to 1981's Escape and 1983's Frontiers. Both of which are excellent albums. Radio opens to one of Journey's last hits, "Girl Can't Help It". It then goes into some very unknown material, which came to be my favorite part of the album. "Positive Touch" is a very fast paced, fun, '80s-style tune which has you boppin' your head. Next comes "Suzanne", my favorite track on the album.I must ask the question... HOW WAS THIS SONG NOT A HIT? It has all of the elements (and more) that made up Journey's previous hits. This is Journey's best album. Hands down. Not only does it have 3 mainstream hits, "Girl Can't Help It", "Be Good to Yourself", and "i'll Be Alright Without You", but the filler material is excellent. After a few listens, you completely ignore the well-knowns and look forward to hearing songs like "Happy to Give" and "Once You Love Somebody". I encourage all non-Journey fans to check it out, and I also encourage all Journey fans who gave up on this album to give it another listen. A++ Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Girl Can't Help It 2. Positive Touch 3. Suzanne 4. Be Good To Yourself 5. Once You Love Somebody 6. Happy To Give 7. Raised On Radio 8. I'll Be Alright Without You 9. It Could Have Been You 10. Eyes Of A Woman 11. Why Can't This Night Go On Forever TRAIL BY FIRE - I mean, sometimes you read some reviews and you try to figure out who could write such incredible things. This is a really strong album in my opinion and if Steve Perry had a great responsability in the making, well honor to him because this is a fantastic release and come back album. Too bad Steve left the band again. Don't have nothing with Augeri which sings well, but Perry is simply a legend. Going deep inside the album contents, in my opinion Trial by fire contains some true Journey classics. The first five tracks are perfect, simply perfect Journeyrama, love songs with a punch. Melody and energy. Perfect AOR. Then after those five songs obviously come some weaker songs but some other tunes are great too. Can't tame the lion for example or the titletrack. Second this album sports incredible contributions from all the guys in the band, Schon and Cain for example are at the top of their game. They never sounded so right. Perry has simply the best voice around in this kind of music. He is always touching, soulful, he communicates. He is one of a kind. He's magic. Maybe he cannot scream like he did in the past, so what? His voice is like a good old wine, it is fantastic to hear him still in the new millennium. In the end this album has tremendous quality in the sound department. It is recorded really really well, the overall sound is full, powerful but sophisticated. Guitars has been recorded in a fantastic way. I really love this album which for me is one of the best in the entire exceptional Journey discography. Steve Perry? .. well, his voice is simply fantastic. Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Message of Love 2. One More 3. When You Love a Woman 4. If He Should Break Your Heart 5. Forever in Blue 6. Castles Burning 7. Don't Be Down on Me Baby 8. Still She Cries 9. Colors of the Spirit 10. When I Think of You 11. Easy to Fall 12. Can't Tame the Lion 13. It's Just the Rain 14. Trial by Fire 15. Baby I'm a Leavin' You [Hidden Track] DREAM AFTER DREAM - This album isn't very well known and wasn't readily available in the US- until the 1990's. I originally had it on a half speed mastered vinyl record that cost me almost $100 and took me several weeks to get from Japan back in 1985. I got it on CD as soon as it was available in that format. It was well worth the hassle and expense! Those who are familiar with Neal Schon's solo work will especially appreciate this recording. It was originally a soundtrack for a Japanese movie, and composed and recorded in a little over a month in Japan. Neal Schon's father arranged the orchestral elements which are flawless. The only vocal tracks on this album are "Destiny," "Sandcastles" and "Little Girl." Steve Perry is breathtaking in all three of these songs,(the clarity and range he had in those days- 1979- was intense) but the instrumentals are just as enjoyable. None of the tracks sound like Journey as portrayed by the songs that got airplay, ("Little Girl" is probably the closest to a "traditional" Journey song) is but the entire album is intense, broad and more like classical music than what you'd expect from a rock and roll band. In my opinion this is absolutely the most awesome project Journey has done, and ironically the least well known. This is definitely worth every cent, and it will definitely blow you away. Track Listings Disc: 1 1. Destiny 2. Snow Theme 3. Sandcastles 4. Few Coins 5. Moon Theme 6. When The Love Has Gone 7. Festival Dance 8. Rape 9.
